Aknore

The Barind region covers most of Rajshahi, Chapainawabganj and Naogaon districts and parts of greater Rangpur, Dinajpur, Bogra and Pabna districts including Natore. The picture in this region is completely different from other parts of the country. The sun-scorched high and low plains, acacia, cactus and some shrubs and occasional palm trees were a common sight in the area. The climate of these areas is very rough and the amount of rainfall in this region is much less than other parts of the country. In the past, the agricultural work here was rain-dependent, so a crop could be produced in a year. If it did not rain in time, crop production would be used. As a result, the people of these areas were extremely poor. Even many warriors were needy. So the people here used to go to other places regularly in search of work. Due to the soil structure and ground water level, irrigation was not possible by deep tube wells prevalent in these areas. In 1975, the engineers of the then BADC in the region invented a kind of deep tube well. In this context, a project called Barind Integrated Area Development Project (BIADP) was taken up under BADC involving 15 upazilas of Rajshahi, Chapai Nawabganj and Naogaon districts for overall development of Barind area. The project included installation of deep tube wells for irrigation work, re-excavation of ponds and canals which did not have water holding capacity due to lack of repairs, planting of trees and construction of roads in rural areas for development of communication system. Due to the success of the project, the Barind Multipurpose Development Authority (BMDA) was formed in 1992 comprising all the 25 upazilas of Rajshahi, Chapai Nawabganj and Naogaon districts to develop the entire Barind area. Since its inception, BMDA has undertaken its activities with the following objectives: Transformation of Barind region into a grain depot to ensure food security. Improving the quality of life of the people. With the above goals and objectives in mind, the BMDA has undertaken various development activities with the financial assistance of the government to improve the socio-economic condition of the people in the Barind area, including the development of agriculture, communication and environment. Now people do not have to go elsewhere in search of work. Due to the success of BMDA's activities, the activities of the authority gradually spread to all the districts of Rangpur and Rajshahi divisions.
